Teaser for the annual “Returning the Names” event.
The event commemorates political prisoners and victims of Soviet repression. Every year, people gathered in Moscow’s Lubyanka Square to read aloud the names of those executed during Stalin’s Great Terror. After the event was banned in Moscow in 2021, it became international and is now held in cities around the world.

“Topography of Terror” is a project by Memorial that maps the history of Soviet political repression onto the landscape of present-day Moscow, connecting sites of imprisonment, execution, state violence, and personal memory with the city as it exists today.
